Spring in Stockholm

Today it was Friday and after lunch we had a couple of hours spending in the archipelago. We usually go to Gålö in the the summertime and today it was a good day to see one of our favourite islands. The temperature was perfect for the month and the ice was gone.

After walking around, we went to Dalarö, a small village were the ferry’s goes to anther places in the archipelago. We had a coffee and icecream at the Strand hotel and it tasted really good.

I recommend a least a day trip to the islands around Stockholm if you visit Sweden. And nowadays you can bee alone in the nature you cant in the summer.

Our card “Tast Stockholm” took us to a dinner in Hammarby Sjöstad in a restaurant called Bistro Sjöstad. We had a great time there and it was our 7th restaurant in 4 weeks we tried. The atmosphere in the area Hammarby sjöstad is very calm and its newly built area and its near the water wherever you are.

Cross country skiing around Stockholm castle

Today we rode to the castle where it was cross country skiing World Cup race. There were many visitors around the castle and the race was exciting. As usual, won Marit Björgen women’s finals while another Norwegian won the men’s final. The weather was fantastic so now we long for even more warmth in the air.

Feel the city come to life

At half past six only the early workers, the dog walkers (like me), the runners and the poor homeless are awake and outdoor. It’s like a magic moment when the vibrant city wakes up and winter is still holding it’s grip over Stockholm. I think it is the same in every city this time of the day a calmness and stillness except from the cars.

image

It’s the same with the small gardening cottages at Eriksdalslunden, waiting for the sun. You can here the birds sing, saying hello to the morning and spring. Soon these cottages will be full of life and if you are interested in gardening you should visit these places and have a chat with it’s owner.

Wonderful!

A sunny stroll along the south-eastern Södermalm

We live next Skanstull metro station and the nearest way to the Årstaviken and South Södermalm is past the Clarion Hotel and Eriksdalsbadet. Eriksdalsbadet is Sweden’s national arena for swimming and is the biggest swimming center in Stockholm.

Vasaloppet on TV!

The city of Stockholm is deserted for everyone is home watching Vasaloppet on television. Nah not really, but for all Swedes that do not have the possibility to go but who enjoy cross country skiing is probably banged in front of the TV and follow the start and the battle for first place.

This is from the start today in -15 degrees..

Vasaloppet was first run in 1922, inspired by a run by King Gustav Vasa in year 1520. It is the oldest, one of the longest, and in popular consideration the biggest cross-country ski race in the world.

The week preceding Vasaloppet is known as Vasaloppet week. Races held during this week include:

  • KortVasan (short – 30 km)
  • TjejVasan (ladies – 30 km)
  • HalvVasan (half – 45 km)
  • UngdomsVasan (9-16 years old) (3-9 km)
  • Öppet spår (non-competitive 90 km)
  • StafettVasan (relay 90 km)
  • SkejtVasan (free technique 30 km and 45 km).
  • Vasaloppet (90 km)

I did “Öppet spår” two years ago, a fantastic experience.
